Affix Boston firmly to your heart

Get to know each neighborhood for what it is so that when you leave, any remembrance makes the day that much better.

SB! YOU ROCK! Hope you had a wonderful birthday.

I’m really still thinking, but here is one…

drum roll please…

Make a point to go visit some older, unknown folks in assisted living facilities. Make their day, possibly hear some fantastic stories and find some inspiration.

more to come…

much love!

Creating a self-portrait and trying new ways of eating

Sarah! After a bit of thought, the two ideas I came up with have to do with my favorite things: food & art!

The first idea: creating your quarter-century self portrait. I think we’re fascinated by the idea of self-portraits, despite their seemingly simple subject matter, because it’s an effort to depict a multifaceted identity through something as superficial as a 2 dimensional likeness. A multimedia collage piece would also be rad. The most important part: Commit to it. Print/make it - big! At least 13 x 17. Even if you don’t hang it, you’ll have something to look back on as you reach new milestones - and maybe you’ll make a new one every ten years? More than just the physical changes in appearance, the way that you choose to view yourself and depict yourself could prove even more interesting over your lifetime.

Second, similar to making 25 new recipes in a year, trying 25 new foods or ways of eating foods you already enjoy- salt on watermelon? Pickled peaches? Grilled pineapple is a favorite of mine. I also find that I enjoy whatever I’m eating much more when I eat it with my favorite chopsticks and a handmade pottery bowl. So.. intentionality and beautiful objects help too!

As a bonus option, and inspired by someone’s suggestion to write a letter to your 50 year-old self (awesome), a short video in the spirit of ‘I Am Your Grandma’ would be rad :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfY1lfFu8j8

Much love! You’ve already got such an excellent list of ideas! Have fun!

Silent meditation retreat

Do at least one weekend (2 night) silent meditation retreat in a spiritual community - Zen, Trappist, Theravada.  No speaking, reading, writing, exercising, just going inward and connecting to spirit.

Media Free Days

Keep at least two days a week media free.  Entirely media free is pretty much impossible (i.e. books, news, billboards, anything printed), but digital media, movies, TV, email, computers, phones, etc. is doable.  Phones are tough though.  Not sure how I’d manage that without shutting off communciation entirely.

Savor This.

Savor something everyday. The walk from door to door. That particular lunch.  The way the sun comes in the window.  - Mitch
